Hello 2022

Hello newsletter subscriber,

It's 2022 now, and I have a new episode out here:

https://corecursive.com/internet-is-duct-tape/

It's a continuation of episode #68 "Quines". Don Mckay is back, and so is Krystal from episode 52. The three of us discuss how the world is messy, and often software has to reflect this mess.

I've also recently released the bonus episode for December from Hanson Hsu on Swift vs Objective-C and other things.

Writing:

I've started a series on building things in Golang for Earthly. I plan to begin with a straightforward application and slowly build up into something more substantial, learning and teaching as I go. The first section is Building a Golang JSON HTTP Server.

I also wrote up some thoughts on people who don't use debuggers and what advantages they might be getting from doing things the hard way. It's called Printf Debugging and Srinivasa Ramanujan and while many have disagreed with my theory, it has sparked some interesting discussions with everyone I've talked to who's read it.

Reads

Some of my favorite reads of the year:

The Premonition: A Pandemic Story by Michael Lewis

Michael Lewis is the best there is at explaining complex topics through a narrative non-fiction story. Here he tackles America's response to Covid.

The Best of Me by David Sedaris

David is my favorite humorist, and this is a greatest hits book.

Work the System by Sam Carpenter

This book helped me get more organized with podcast production. It's a bit of a strange book, but if you could use some organization in your life, you might find it helpful.

What are your favorites reads or listens of the year? Please reply and let me know.

Thanks, Adam @adamgordonbell

Adam Gordon Bell May 2nd Hey! Do you recognize this man? Well, he has some things to teach us about learning in the latest episode: https://corecursive.com/the-power-of-context/ Todays' podcast episode is about how to learn hard things. Guest Steve Krouse ( not pictured ) was a struggling student when he joined an after school program based around programming and some revolutionary teaching methods. That after school program changed his life in pretty profound ways. Today's episode is all...

Adam Gordon Bell April 2nd Hey! I have a new podcast episode out about this graph: I know that doesn't sound exciting, but it actually is! https://corecursive.com/briffa-sep98-e/ That is a famous climate change graph that caused a lot of controversy, with newspapers and news shows accusing scientists of fraud and deception. While scientists claimed they were victims of a targeted attack. I got a little obsessed with what actually happened. It happened 15 years ago, but the code is still out...

Adam Gordon Bell Oct 2nd Hey! I have a new podcast episode is out: https://corecursive.com/one-million-checkboxes-with-nolen-royalty/ It's at the intersection of coding, game building, art and online trolls. That is to say it's a super fun episode about building something and having it become really really huge and all the unexpected things that follow. But it's also about how the internet used to be more fun, and how Nolen Royalty is trying to bring us back to the era of Boaty McBoatface I...
