LISP in Space

Hello CoRecursive newsletter subscriber,

LISP in Space

It's May now, and I have a new episode out here.

It's the story of Ron Garret working on LISP at The Jet Propulsion Lab. He started there as part of his Comp Sci Ph.D. and worked on prototypes for the first Mars Rover: Sojourner.

I'm not sure what I want to share because I don't want to spoil the story, but LISP S-expressions are used to save a mission in deep space. It's a wild story that I've not heard before. Check it out:

Bonus Episode

Ron and I were exchanging emails for a bit before we got a chance to talk, and it was a different story that brought Ron to my attention: He was a very early Google employee. So I've released a bonus episode about Ron's Adventures at Google as a Patreon episode for supporters:

Ron has lived an exciting life because his time at Google includes:

  • Executing Larry Page's vision for what would become one of their most iconic products.
  • Riding Sergey's unicycle.
  • Generally struggling to ship software enough.

Tacit Learning

Since the last newsletter, I've also written a bit about tacit learning and a round-up of go streamers. And I was also a guest host on programming throw down.

Since the last newsletter, I've gotten some excellent feedback on the last bonus episode, where among other things, I discussed some of the thinking behind the way I edit the podcast and why I'm planning to do more "This day in history" episodes.

Those questions came from listeners and so if you have any questions about me, software development, tech stuff, or the podcast, let me know, and an answer might show up in a future episode.

Thanks,

Adam Gordon Bell

Adam Gordon Bell May 2nd Hey! Do you recognize this man? Well, he has some things to teach us about learning in the latest episode: https://corecursive.com/the-power-of-context/ Todays' podcast episode is about how to learn hard things. Guest Steve Krouse ( not pictured ) was a struggling student when he joined an after school program based around programming and some revolutionary teaching methods. That after school program changed his life in pretty profound ways. Today's episode is all...

Adam Gordon Bell April 2nd Hey! I have a new podcast episode out about this graph: I know that doesn't sound exciting, but it actually is! https://corecursive.com/briffa-sep98-e/ That is a famous climate change graph that caused a lot of controversy, with newspapers and news shows accusing scientists of fraud and deception. While scientists claimed they were victims of a targeted attack. I got a little obsessed with what actually happened. It happened 15 years ago, but the code is still out...

Adam Gordon Bell Oct 2nd Hey! I have a new podcast episode is out: https://corecursive.com/one-million-checkboxes-with-nolen-royalty/ It's at the intersection of coding, game building, art and online trolls. That is to say it's a super fun episode about building something and having it become really really huge and all the unexpected things that follow. But it's also about how the internet used to be more fun, and how Nolen Royalty is trying to bring us back to the era of Boaty McBoatface I...
