Hello CoRecursive newsletter subscriber!
It's November now, and I have a new episode out here:
https://corecursive.com/software-world-tour-with-son-luong-ngoc/
The episode follows Son Luong Ngoc through his early career, starting with a desire to build video games in Vietnam and shadowing him through his travels around the world, including Canada and Singapore, back to Vietnam, then China, and finally ending up in Europe.
Travel is an excellent lens for viewing how people's work and lives vary worldwide. In many ways, software development is the same no matter where you go, but how it's approached can differ.
According to Son, out of Hanoi, Waterloo and Hangzhou, it's clear where people work the hardest, where people are the smartest, and where people know how to have the most fun. But he didn't end up choosing any of those places.
It's a fascinating episode that, while probably more about culture, gives a fascinating peek into Chinese software development practices. Please find it in your podcast player or with a full transcript here: https://corecursive.com/software-world-tour-with-son-luong-ngoc/
The last episode with Chet Haas about creating the Android operating system is one of my favorites. Chet is a great speaker with an inspiring and high-stakes story. While the whole story is exciting, the part that resonated with people most was the challenge of hiring for Android. Frustration around hiring is at an all-time high. If you haven't already checked it out, please do and let me know what you think: https://corecursive.com/android-with-chet-haase/
Bonus Content:
Speaking of hiring, Chet actually had trouble himself getting hired at Google and I'll be sharing our conversation about that in an upcoming bonus episode for Patreon supporters.
Due to catching covid last month, I'm a bit behind on things, but that should be coming soon. Additionally, I'll be sharing a conversation with Son about how Alibaba and other big Chinese tech companies have aligned themselves with China's Belt and Road initiative to spread out of China and keep growth going. Also, we'll be talking a little about all the great open-source Chinese code that no one is paying attention to.
So if you are a supporter, thank you so much for supporting me, and stay tuned for those.
Thanks, Adam

Adam Gordon Bell April 2nd Hey! While scientists claimed they were victims of a targeted attack. I got a little obsessed with what actually happened. It happened 15 years ago, but the code is still out...
