The Inside Story of Android

Hello CoRecursive newsletter subscriber,

It's October now, and I have a new episode out here:

https://corecursive.com/android-with-chet-haase/

It's about the early days of Android and it's a story I wouldn't usually be able to share because it's the story of the many people who worked on Android in the early days. Typically, something like this is out of reach because time constraints limit me to interviewing a guest per episode. Thankfully, in this case, I get to stand on the shoulders of giants. Chet Haase has not only been on the Android team for years but has also interviewed 50+ people from the early android team and written a book on the topic.

He shared with me that he often felt that the stories of the people on the teams building these projects never get out. Steve Jobs appeared on stage to announce the iPhone, but what about the people who made it? Often you only get to hear that story, the development story, if you work later with someone who was on that team. And eventually, even those stories fade from memory. Well, that won't happen for Android – the history has been recorded and it's a wild tale.

In an upcoming bonus episode for Patreon supporters, Chet will share the story of his introduction to Google. It turns out he had to interview there several times to get in. Find that on Patreon later this month.

In other news, for the build system fans, I released a sizeable interview-based article on the Bazel build system for earthly.

Thanks,

Adam

That after school program changed his life in pretty profound ways. Today's episode is all...

Adam Gordon Bell April 2nd Hey! I have a new podcast episode out about this graph: I know that doesn't sound exciting, but it actually is! https://corecursive.com/briffa-sep98-e/ That is a famous climate change graph that caused a lot of controversy, with newspapers and news shows accusing scientists of fraud and deception. While scientists claimed they were victims of a targeted attack. I got a little obsessed with what actually happened. It happened 15 years ago, but the code is still out...
