Three Cheers for CPAN

Hello CoRecursive subscriber,

It's August now, and I have a new episode out:

This Day In History: CPAN

CPAN

CPAN, The Comprehensive Perl Archive Network, changed software development for the better, and the story behind its creation is fascinating. The episode also touches on my frustrations being a .Net developer and about two different conceptions of software development and how the battle between them played out in the software development communities.

There are monthly new stories about software supply chain attacks, open source exploits, and open source developers burning out, but very few stories about the power of open source communities. So while a historical episode, we also attempt to draw attention to and celebrate the world of open source packages that we all use and depend upon.

The Slow March of Progress in Programming Language Tooling

Since my last newsletter, I've also published my post on software tooling. This post initially started with the question: What has improved in software development that isn't a programming language syntax or semantic improvement? I asked myself this and many others this and got some exciting results. And I think people sometimes forget that the supportive tooling around a programming language becomes the new user experience.

The post showed up on hacker news, where it sparked some interesting discussions.

I've also written a relatively long introduction to Terraform. But really, the thing I've put the most effort into lately has been The CPAN Episode, so check it out and let me know what you think.

Well, he has some things to teach us about learning in the latest episode: https://corecursive.com/the-power-of-context/ Todays' podcast episode is about how to learn hard things. Guest Steve Krouse ( not pictured ) was a struggling student when he joined an after school program based around programming and some revolutionary teaching methods. That after school program changed his life in pretty profound ways. Today's episode is all...

Adam Gordon Bell April 2nd Hey! I have a new podcast episode out about this graph: I know that doesn't sound exciting, but it actually is! https://corecursive.com/briffa-sep98-e/ That is a famous climate change graph that caused a lot of controversy, with newspapers and news shows accusing scientists of fraud and deception. While scientists claimed they were victims of a targeted attack. I got a little obsessed with what actually happened. It happened 15 years ago, but the code is still out...

Adam Gordon Bell Oct 2nd Hey! I have a new podcast episode is out: https://corecursive.com/one-million-checkboxes-with-nolen-royalty/ It's at the intersection of coding, game building, art and online trolls. That is to say it's a super fun episode about building something and having it become really really huge and all the unexpected things that follow. But it's also about how the internet used to be more fun, and how Nolen Royalty is trying to bring us back to the era of Boaty McBoatface I...
